Eric Garner
September 15 …
The death of Eric Garner marked a pivotal moment in contemporary American discussions surrounding policing, accountability, and civil rights.
Garner was born on September 15, 1970 and spent much of his life in Staten Island, NY. He was a devoted father and grandfather, with deep ties to both his family and local community. He was friendly and outspoken, often serving as a mediator in conflicts and looking out for those around him. Like many working-class New Yorkers, he faced economic challenges, providing for his family through a variety of informal and small-scale jobs.
Garner’s life was marked more by personal experience than by academic credentials. Over the years, he held different positions, including maintenance and service roles, while also resorting to informal street vending to make ends meet. His struggles echoed the broader reality of many individuals managing financial pressures amidst limited economic prospects.
Garner’s true accomplishments lay in his dedication to his family and community. He was known for caring for his children and grandchildren, nurturing strong personal relationships. His life symbolized the experiences of countless individuals caught at the intersection of economic hardship and frequent encounters with law enforcement, underscoring systemic issues that extend beyond any one incident.
On July 17, 2014, Garner died after being placed in a chokehold by a New York City police officer while being arrested for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. As multiple officers restrained him, Garner repeatedly stated, “I can’t breathe,” a powerful phrase captured on video that later became a national rallying cry.
Garner’s death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner. Although a grand jury decided not to indict the officer, he was eventually dismissed from the New York City Police Department following a departmental process.
Garner’s death had a significant impact on his family and community. It ignited protests and contributing to the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The death of Eric Garner raised public awareness, inspired activism, and played a crucial role in shaping ongoing national discussions about police use of force, accountability, and racial justice.
