Black Maternal Health Week

Black Maternal Health Week

April 11-17

Black Maternal Health Week — observed annually from April 11 to April 17 — brings attention to the disproportionately high maternal mortality rates faced by Black women in the United States.

This national week of action that aims to raise awareness around racial inequities in country’s maternal health outcomes. It serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the systemic inequities in healthcare, social determinants of health, and the historical factors that contribute to these disparities.

Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than their white counterparts. It is a stark reminder of the urgent need for change in maternal healthcare practices, policies, and attitudes.

The week-long observance encourages advocacy, education, and dialogue about the importance of addressing the root causes of these health disparities, such as access to quality healthcare, implicit bias among healthcare providers, and the impact of socioeconomic factors.

Organizations like the Black Mamas Matter Alliance lead efforts to promote the health and well-being of Black mothers by providing resources, organizing events, and supporting legislation that aims to reduce maternal mortality rates. By centering the voices and experiences of Black women, the week calls for a collective commitment to creating a more equitable and just healthcare system.

In addition to focusing on immediate healthcare interventions, this observance also emphasizes the importance of mental health and community support for Black mothers. It highlights the need for culturally competent care, mental health services, and peer support networks to address the unique challenges Black women face during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

By fostering a holistic approach to maternal health, Black Maternal Health Week encourages both personal and systemic action to ensure that every mother, regardless of race or background, has the resources and support needed to have a healthy pregnancy and a safe, empowering birthing experience.
