TV One
January 19 …
TV One is a U.S. cable television channel created to serve adult African American viewers with lifestyle, entertainment, documentary, and news programming.
Launched on January 19, 2004, the channel was established by Radio One — now known as Urban One — under the guidance of Alfred Liggins III, with media entrepreneur Cathy Hughes serving as the company’s chairperson and key founding figure. Launched in partnership with Comcast, it initially reached around 2.2 million households. Its origins are rooted in Radio One’s long-standing commitment to Black audiences, dating back to its founding by Hughes in 1980.
The channel was created to address a perceived need for quality, adult-oriented programming that authentically reflects Black life, history, and culture. Its mission focuses on representing Black adults through culturally relevant original content, documentaries, classic series, and news programming, blending entertainment with storytelling that amplifies Black voices.
The channel draws creative talent and producers from Black communities and targets adult Black audiences, specifically those aged 25 and older. It seeks a mix of nostalgic syndicated classics, contemporary original scripted and unscripted series, and public affairs content.
Over the years, the channel has significantly expanded its distribution and diversified into related brands, such as CLEO TV, aimed at women of color, all while maintaining a commitment to representation and cultural relevance.
The channel has gained industry acclaim for its programming that celebrates Black artists, history, and civic engagement. Urban One has also received various accolades, including leadership honors for Alfred Liggins III and Cathy Hughes from Ernst & Young.
It also is celebrated for the creation of recognition programs like the “Urban One Honors,” which celebrate Black achievement in music, media, and community service, as well as for producing high-profile events and series. Series such as “Unsung,” “News One Now,” and other documentary and original productions have earned recognition from niche and trade circles for highlighting overlooked stories and contributors to American culture.
Through it commitment to telling stories that amplify Black voices, TV One has solidified its status as a leading platform for Black-centered storytelling in contemporary U.S. television.
