November 24

Ron Dellums was a transformative American politician and activist whose career reshaped national policy, advanced civil rights, and strengthened the voice of African Americans in U.S. governance.

Born on November 24, 1935 in Oakland, CA, Dellums was raised in a politically conscious household that prioritized community service, education, and social justice. His uncle was pioneering labor organizer, C.L. Dellums, who helped transform the American labor movement.

Dellums attended Oakland Technical High School and later pursued studies at Oakland City College before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, an experience that ingrained in him a lifelong dedication to veterans’ issues and public service. Influenced by leaders like A. Philip Randolph and inspired by the civil rights activism of Martin Luther King Jr., Dellums cultivated a political philosophy rooted in equality, peace, and empowerment for marginalized communities.

Dellums was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1970, representing California’s 9th congressional district for over 20 years. As a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, he collaborated with contemporaries like Shirley Chisholm and John Conyers to champion civil rights legislation, combat discrimination, and advocate for economic justice.

Dellums gained national recognition for his opposition to U.S. military involvement in Southeast Asia, his advocacy for affordable housing, healthcare, and education, and his initiatives to reform defense policy. He played a crucial role in mentoring a new generation of political leaders, emphasizing grassroots organizing, coalition-building, and ethical governance as vital strategies for achieving systemic change.

After leaving Congress in 1998, Dellums continued his public service as the mayor of Oakland from 2007 to 2011, where he focused on social programs, economic development, and public safety reforms.

Throughout his life, he received numerous accolades from civil rights groups, veterans’ organizations, and civic associations in recognition of his leadership and commitment to justice. His legacy is reflected in his contributions to civil rights, progressive legislation, and inclusive governance.

Ron Dellums is remembered as a steadfast advocate who expanded the possibilities of American democracy, strengthened communities, and inspired future generations of political and social leaders.
