Castile attended local public schools and graduated from Central High School. After graduation, he entered the workforce and established a stable career within the Saint Paul Public Schools system. Although he did not take a widely publicized path to college, he earned a reputation for his reliability and the care he exhibited in roles that involved daily interactions with students.

Castile’s achievements were rooted in his long-term dedication to the school community. He held various positions, most notably as a cafeteria supervisor, where he became well-known for building positive relationships with students.

Colleagues and children alike remembered him for learning students’ names, ensuring that those who couldn’t afford meals still had access to food, and creating a welcoming atmosphere. On July 6, 2016, Castile was tragically shot during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, MN by a police officer. He had informed the officer that he was legally carrying a firearm when he was shot multiple times while seated in his car. The incident gained immediate national attention, particularly because it was livestreamed by his partner.

The officer was charged with manslaughter, but was acquitted in 2017. Later, Castile’s family reached a civil settlement with the city, and his death intensified scrutiny of police practices during traffic stops.

Castile’s death had a profound impact on social justice movements and public discourse. It emerged as a pivotal moment within the broader Black Lives Matter movement, igniting protests and urgent calls for police reform, transparency, and accountability.
