December …

Miami MoCAAD — Miami Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora — is a dynamic arts institution that champions contemporary artistic expression rooted in the African Diaspora, blending cultural heritage with innovative technology to expand access to art and historical storytelling locally and globally.

Celebrating a decade of creativity and influence, the museum has emerged as an essential platform for artists of African descent, deepening the appreciation of the Diaspora’s impact on American society, culture, and commerce.

Founded in December 2015, the Museum aims to go beyond traditional boundaries by incorporating digital, augmented reality, and virtual reality experiences into its exhibitions. It collaborates with local cultural partners across Miami, including venues like the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater in Overtown, while also reaching audiences globally through its virtual gallery spaces.

The founding was inspired by the cultural richness of Miami’s African American and Afro-Caribbean communities, the worldwide significance of African Diaspora art, and a commitment to utilizing cutting-edge technology to enhance the accessibility and engagement of contemporary art beyond conventional museum models.

Over the years, the Museum has made significant contributions to American culture by amplifying contemporary voices from the African Diaspora and facilitating cross-cultural dialogue through exhibitions, immersive digital installations, and community-focused programming. Its innovative approach — featuring interactive murals and virtual reality galleries — has transformed audience engagement with art, drawing both local residents and international visitors.

The museum’s impact was widely recognized during its tenth anniversary in December 2025, celebrated with a proclamation from Miami-Dade County and acknowledgement during Miami Art Week for its artistic leadership, community collaborations, and promotion of cultural tourism and education.

Through these initiatives, Miami MoCAAD continues to shape how artists and communities perceive themselves and are perceived within the larger context of American history and contemporary culture.
